On September 18, the United States authorized the potential sale of anti-tank weaponry to Poland, in a package including up to 2,506 FGM-148F Javelin missiles and 253 Light Command Launch Units (LwCLUs).

The deal, estimated at around $780 million including equipment and associated services, is presented by Polish authorities as a reinforcement of light infantry anti-tank capabilities amid tensions with Russia. Currently, portable Javelin systems already equip formations of the country’s Territorial Defense Forces.

Poland acquired its first batch of FGM-148F missiles in May 2020—a contract that included 60 CLU launchers and 180 missiles, with deliveries completed in October 2022—and has since sought alternatives for local production. In 2021, the government and state-owned company PGZ signed a memorandum with the Javelin Joint Venture (a partnership between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin) to explore manufacturing the systems in Poland.

The Javelin is a portable “fire-and-forget” anti-tank missile with thermal guidance that allows the missile to autonomously find its target after launch. The FGM-148F version, whose production began in May 2020, features an improved multi-purpose warhead with a tandem charge to penetrate reactive armor and a fragmentation casing to increase effectiveness against personnel and lightly armored targets; the system can also engage low-altitude aerial targets such as helicopters and drones.
